Complete Guide to Wooden Jewelry Care

Every piece that leaves this studio is primarily made of wood, but almost none of it is wood alone. Metal rides along on nearly every band and pendant. Many pieces also carry a gemstone, a strip of shell, or a section of bone or antler. Each of those materials answers differently to water, abrasion, and household chemicals, so the care that makes sense for a finished ebony band is not always the care that makes sense for the same band with mother of pearl set into it.

The useful habit is simple: identify the most sensitive material on the piece, and let that material set the limits for the whole thing.

Wear It Normally, but Limit Long Exposure

Water Is a Duration Question for Finished Wood

Wood takes on and gives off moisture from the air around it. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory notes that the small swings that happen from day to day are usually of no consequence. What moves the wood enough to matter is duration: a long soak, a full season of dry heat, or months spent at one extreme of humidity.

For protection, every piece that leaves the studio is finished in Odie's Oil. Odie's is a hardwax oil that cures into the wood rather than sitting on top as a film. That finish slows the moisture exchange. It does not stop it, and it does not make the wood waterproof. A few seconds of rain or a rinsed hand barely registers. Swimming, a shower, or a sink full of dishes is long enough for moisture to work past the finish's head start.

Species matter here too. Lignum vitae is dense and naturally oily enough that it was once carved into ship bearings. A finished lignum vitae piece will outlast an equally finished koa piece in the same rainstorm. Both still belong out of the water for anything longer than a splash.

Proven Chemicals Can Damage a Finish

A short list of household and outdoor products does real damage to a finish like this one. Acetone is a strong enough solvent to cut through nearly any coating short of a catalyzed film. Ammonia and bleach cleaners are alkaline enough to dull a finish through the same chemistry that etches other surfaces. DEET, the active ingredient in most insect repellents, is listed on its own manufacturer's label as capable of damaging varnished surfaces. None of these need to soak the wood to matter. A hand that just applied bug spray, or a countertop just wiped with a bleach cleaner, makes enough contact to dull a finish over time, so I keep all four away from the wood. You want to be careful with any chemicals though.

Finished ebony and gold handle ordinary daily wear without much thought. For the wood, part of that is hardness: ebony sits high on the Janka hardness scale, which measures how much force it takes to dent a wood's surface. Lignum vitae and African blackwood sit even higher. Softer woods still wear well once finished, but they give up surface marks more readily under the same knocks.

Soft stones and shell live on a different scale entirely. Turquoise and opal sit lower on the Mohs hardness scale, which ranks how easily one mineral surface scratches another. I lean toward earrings, pendants, or a protected setting for those stones when the piece is meant for everyday knocks, rather than leaving them fully exposed on a ring.

Nacre, the material behind mother of pearl, abalone, and paua, scores only about 2.5 on Mohs. Softness is not the whole story, though. Nacre's layered structure resists cracking better than that number suggests. What actually threatens it is abrasion and acid. Perfume, cosmetics, and even everyday perspiration can dull or etch it. A piece with nacre in it asks for a wipe after wearing and a little more care around chemicals than a plain wood-and-metal band does.

Finished Wood Needs a Light Touch and an Occasional Touch-Up

Most of the time, a soft dry cloth is all a wooden surface needs, whether it is collecting dust on a shelf or picking up fingerprints on a hand. When the wood starts to look dry or dull rather than just dusty, mineral oil is the touch-up I recommend. A finished cutting board is maintained the same way: the curing finish is already in place, and the mineral oil refreshes the surface look.

Cooking oils like olive or coconut go rancid and turn sticky. Furniture polish can leave a silicone residue. Essential oils smell nice but do nothing useful for the wood, and some irritate skin. Mineral oil is inert. It never cures, never goes bad, and never builds up into a film that has to be cleaned off later.

Metal Usually Needs Restraint, Not Routine Restoration

Copper and brass darken with wear the way an old penny or a well-handled doorknob does. That color is a preference, not something that has to be scrubbed off. The real risk is over-polishing. Polishing lifts the tarnish, and it takes a sliver of metal with it. Enough repeat polishing softens the detail on a piece for good.

Not every silver on a piece behaves the same way. Standard sterling can tarnish like any silver does. The Continuum and Sterlium Plus alloys I use instead are built with less copper specifically to resist that. Gold barely reacts to anything. It is the one metal on a mixed piece that still looks close to new years in, even while the wood or copper beside it is developing a story of its own.

Nacre, Bone, Antler, and Vulnerable Stones Need Their Own Limits

Mother of pearl, abalone, and paua are all forms of nacre. Abrasion marks them easily, and acid attacks them: cleaning chemicals, perfume, cosmetics, and the mild acid in perspiration. A soft wipe after wearing keeps that contact from sitting on the surface. When a dry cloth is not enough, warm soapy water is the next step up.

Bone and antler want the opposite of a wet clean. Their real threat is humidity swinging back and forth, not the oils and salt that come from being worn. The color that builds up from handling is patina, the same as it is on wood or brass. It is not something to scrub back out.

Turquoise and opal are softer stones, often set in a way that leaves them exposed, so gentle, non-abrasive cleaning matters more for them than it does for a harder gem.

Ultrasonic and Steam Cleaning Do Not Belong on a Mixed-Material Piece

Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are too aggressive for wood, and they cross the line for nacre, turquoise, and opal too. On a mixed-material piece, the cloth, soap, and mineral oil above already cover what cleaning actually requires.

Store for Scratch Resistance and Stable Conditions

Separate Hard Pieces From Soft Surfaces

Anything harder will scratch anything softer. That is reason enough to store pieces apart rather than loose in one drawer. A soft pouch or a lined box keeps metal and harder stones from ever touching wood, nacre, opal, turquoise, or another soft gem. Nacre alone sits at Mohs 2.5, soft enough that almost anything else in a jewelry box could mark it.

A Stable Indoor Environment Matters More Than a Perfect Number

Wood does best around 40 to 60 percent relative humidity. Bone and antler prefer a narrower band, 45 to 55 percent. Since one often sits inside the other, a single target near 50 percent keeps everything in a mixed-material piece comfortable at once, and that is close to where most homes already sit without any intervention.

The risk runs in both directions. Wood kept too dry for too long can shrink enough to split. Wood kept too damp for too long swells and can compromise the finish. Neither extreme happens from a bad week. It takes months stuck at one end, or repeated swings between the two, for either to become a real problem. Silica gel earns its keep in a genuinely damp room. It does not belong in every jewelry box by default.

Sunlight Changes Color More Than It Changes Structural Health

Light changes wood color. How much depends entirely on the species. Ebony, the wood I use most, barely shifts at all. Purpleheart tells the opposite story, drifting from the gray-brown it comes off the saw as into a real purple, then further, over years, into something deeper. Bone and antler move too, but in the other direction: they lighten in sunlight instead of darkening. None of this is damage. It is a question of where a piece lands on its own color, and light is what gets it there.

Know When Wear Has Become Damage

Gradual Surface Change Is Normal Wear

Every material in a piece like this ages differently, and none of it needs to look like the others to be normal. Wood picks up a smoother, more settled sheen exactly where it is handled most. Copper and brass warm and darken. Bone and antler pick up color from being touched. Fossil material (mammoth tooth, megalodon teeth, agatized coral) barely moves at all, because fossilization already replaced the original organic material with mineral before it ever reached the bench.

Cracks, Lifted Finish, and Active Corrosion Need Attention

Damage looks different once you know what you are checking for. A crack, a gouge, a finish that has gone sticky or started lifting, or corrosion that is actively flaking and spreading are all past the point of normal wear. A stable, darkened patch of copper or brass is not the same thing as that last one: it sits flat and settled, while active corrosion keeps spreading and sheds material as it goes. Every piece comes with lifetime reconditioning built in. If a piece crosses that line, bring it in rather than living with it.
